For a fully funded HSE

The campaign for health and safety regulation to get the resources it needs

We believe that everyone has a fundamental right to be kept safe and healthy at work.

We also know that this doesn’t just happen by accident – it needs proper regulation and enforcement to make sure that employers are following the rules and have the right advice to keep everyone safe.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are the UK experts on health and safety in the workplace, and we are proud to be the trade union for the scientists, specialists and inspectors who dedicate their lives to keeping us all safe.

Budget cut for HSE since 2010 50%
Number of frontline inspectors <500

The problem

Since 2010 the budget of the HSE has been cut by over 50% in real terms. Job cuts have hit certain specialisms, such as personal protective equipment (PPE) hard, and there are now more MPs in Westminster than there are front line inspectors at the HSE. This has to change.

What we’re calling for

  • Commitment to ensure the HSE gets the resources it needs reversing cuts made since 2010.
  • Government-funded public information campaign encouraging workers and the public to report breaches of workplace health and safety guidance to the HSE.
  • Government to safeguard the independence of the HSE
