The report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy report makes clear that decisions need to be made now by the government, enabling 10GW of nuclear power to be built so nuclear can play its part in the low carbon energy mix.

Sue Ferns, senior deputy general secretary of Prospect, responded:

“This cross-party roadmap is an important reminder to the government of how urgently it needs to make key decisions on the future of new nuclear generation.

“Nuclear power will play a vital role in our future clean energy mix but with older nuclear power stations coming off line and no decisions yet made on how new stations are going to be financed, there is a real risk that we get left behind.

“If the government is truly serious about achieving net zero it needs to get its act together and get on with building new nuclear, safeguarding vital jobs skills and investment.

“Facilities such as Springfields fuels are already struggling due to inaction and if government fails to turn ambition into action soon, then we will lose the skilled workforce that makes the UK world-leading in nuclear power.”
