Government must explore extension of nuclear power plants to avoid energy blackouts

30 May 2022

Prospect has responded to reports that the Government is concerned about energy blackouts this winter.

Sue Ferns, Senior Deputy General Secretary, said:

“All options to prevent energy blackouts this winter must be explored.

“The Government must ask nuclear power plant operators to urgently explore safely extending the life of reactors due to be decommissioned in the coming months, including Hinkley Point B, which is otherwise due to come offline this summer.

“The safe conversion of gas-fired power stations to hydrogen must also be prioritised.

“No stone can be left unturned in our quest to increase our energy security and prevent our energy and cost-of-living crises spiralling further.”
