Increase in pay for MPs will be met askance by many civil service members

2 March 2022

Prospect has responded to news that MPs will receive a 2.7% pay rise against the background of pay restraint for public servants.

Garry Graham, Prospect deputy general secretary said:

“The increase in pay for MPs will be met askance by many civil service members who saw their pay frozen last year and have, in contrast to MPs, had to endure a decade of pay restraint and sub inflation increases.

“MPs have benefited from an independent review body because it has stopped their pay being a political football. What is hypocritical and unacceptable is that similar arrangements have not been afforded for civil servants and the government and ministers play politics with the pay of the staff who serve them.”
