Prospect recovers more than £4m in personal injury compensation in one year

Over the course of 2017, the combined figures of compensation recovered for members in Prospect including the BECTU sector was in excess of £4m.

94 Prospect members (excluding the BECTU sector) have either had their personal injury (PI) scheme case won or settled by Prospect’s lawyers and received in excess of £3.4m, our highest figure in seven years!

As in previous years, the majority of cases are general injuries (slip/trips, road traffic accidents etc). However, there has been a gradual year-on-year rise in cases of work-related stress, along with the continual presence of asbestos-related diseases, often linked to exposure more than 40 years ago.

Bodybuilding champion wins damages

Fitness instructor and Prospect member David Brice was injured at work when he fell over a foam massage roller that had carelessly been left lying on the gym floor.

He suffered an injury to the top of his right thigh bone as a result of his fall. David is no ordinary fitness instructor – he is a British body building champion – and so was naturally concerned about the effect that such an injury would have on him in terms of his ability to work but also his ability to continue to bodybuild.

David took his case to Prospect’s lawyers, Pattinson & Brewer. David said: “Professional legal advice through Prospect allowed me to be properly compensated. I had access to an independent expert who not only examined me and prepared a report but was also able to speak with both me and my legal team about the concerns that I had for the future.

“I found Prospect’s lawyers Pattinson & Brewer to be both supportive and professional in their advice,” continued David.

“Within 12 months of the accident, I had won the over-70s British National Body Building Championship!”

Helen Hall, Prospect senior legal assistant, who administers the personal injury scheme, said “Prospect’s legal services cover members for bringing claims when accidents occur both in or outside of work.”
