How will the Brexit negotiations affect my state pension?

Last updated: 03 Jul 2020

The UK Government and the European Union (EU) are still in discussions on the future relationship that will apply from the 1st January 2021.

These discussions will determine the future arrangements, including for the state pension, for EU nationals moving to the UK and UK nationals moving to an EU member state after the 1st January 2021.

Separate to these discussions an agreement has been reached between UK and Republic of Ireland to ensure reciprocal arrangements independent of the EU negotiations.

The House of Commons Library has published a detailed briefing note on Brexit and state pensions online here: https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-7894/.

The Government have published guidance online covering both Benefits and pensions for UK nationals in the EEA and Switzerland and Benefits and pensions for EEA and Swiss citizens in the UK.

Members who’ve worked in more than one EU member state and are approaching retirement can contact the International Pension Centre for information on your state pension entitlement.
