Aviation support scheme welcome but far from comprehensive package needed

29 January 2021

Prospect, a union representing thousands of aviation workers has responded to the Airport and Ground Operations Support Scheme by the UK Government.

Garry Graham, Prospect deputy general secretary, said:

“The introduction of business rates relief and some support for airports and ground operations in England is welcome and long overdue. In fact Scotland introduced a similar scheme on business rates last summer. We will work to make sure employers make full and effective use of this scheme to prioritise protecting jobs and skills.

“These arrangements are however very far from the comprehensive package of support for the whole sector that the government has repeatedly talked about, but never actually delivered.

“With increased travel restrictions being introduced and furlough set to end in the spring, the government has a responsibility and duty to both support and protect jobs through ongoing sectoral job support, but also the whole aviation infrastructure of the UK.
