AI policy is a key test of whether the government really is prepared to ensure workers have a say in their futures.
The EU has published a white paper setting out its plans for artificial intelligence. At the same time the published its strategy on the use of data and the digital economy. Both of these are areas where Prospect is at the forefront of union involvement in the UK.
Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect Union, commenting on the white paper, said:
“This is a critically important moment in trying to shape an ethical approach to artificial intelligence, digital and new technology.
“The EU set the standard on data protection with GDPR, it now needs to do the same for artificial intelligence and its impact on the future of work.
“Social partnership is at the core of the EU’s approach and that means an effective voice for workers and unions in managing the transition to a digital economy.
“The question for the UK government is where do they want to be in this debate: Aligned with the EU setting world-leading standards for purpose-driven technology, or slowly weakening standards in the drive for trade deals elsewhere?
“This is a key test of whether the government really is prepared to ensure workers have a say in their futures.”
