No time to spare to upgrade UK electricity networks

Prospect has commented on newly published recommendations from the UK’s Electricity Networks Commissioner.

Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary Sue Ferns said: “This report sets out a much-needed package of reforms to upgrade our electricity networks as the backbone of an affordable, secure, and decarbonised energy system.

“But, as the report recognises, we can’t deliver the necessary infrastructure without the skilled workers to plan, build, operate, and maintain it.

“Years of failed policy and regulation have caused a workforce crisis in our electricity networks, with widespread issues of understaffing, overwork, unsafe conditions, and low morale.

“There is no time to spare. Ministers and Ofgem must turn this around to deliver a net zero, energy secure future that supports good, green jobs across the UK.”
