Nvidia commitment to UK jobs is welcome but words are not enough

The chief executive of Nvidia, which is taking over Cambridge tech firm Arm, has told the Times he is willing to sign binding agreements to protect British jobs.

Prospect general secretary Mike Clancy responded to the news:

“Reports that Nvidia is prepared to make a commitment to protect British jobs is welcome but we need to see much more detail. British takeovers have seen promises made before only for them to broken down the line.

“This deal has wide implications for UK innovation and the tech sector as a whole.  This is about jobs, protecting our tech independence and maintaining Cambridge as the centre of Arm’s operations, as Herman Hauser has warned.

“The government must demonstrate it is committed to protecting and supporting our country’s tech crown jewels and the supply-chain that backs it up. At the very least we need binding conditions on the sale before it proceeds any further.”
