Parliament must take all possible measures to minimise risk to staff
Parliamentary authorities have today set out proposals for parliament to be recalled with limited numbers of MPs in the chamber and others able to join virtually.
Garry Graham, deputy general secretary of Prospect, responded to the proposals:
“Parliamentary scrutiny of the response to the current crisis is vital and these look like sensible proposals for making that happen at minimal risk.
“For the staff who work for both Houses of Parliament, some critical questions remain. What steps will be taken to protect staff who have to come to work in the Palace of Westminster? Will the Speaker, the leader of the House and the opposition give a commitment that no business which is not directly related to the COVID-19 response or otherwise essential will be tabled?
“Prospect will be seeking assurances that all possible measures will be taken to minimise risk to staff, including where appropriate the provision of suitable PPE.”
