Staff in Department for Education given lowest performance rating will receive a consolidated pay rise this year
Prospect welcomes the Department’s decision after equality data once again shows that staff with protected characteristics are still more likely to be given a Must Improve performance rating.
Prospect along with the other recognised trade unions has argued in previous years’ pay negotiations that excluding staff with a Must Improve performance rating from the annual pay award is unfair given the discriminatory nature of the performance management system. The Department’s own data highlights that the practice of forced distribution inherent with the current system disproportionately affects staff with certain protected characteristics under the Equality Act.
It was therefore welcome news that the Department will address this issue by including all staff – except those under formal measures – in this year’s pay award.
The 2016 pay award will see staff receive a consolidated increase of the greater of 1% of the mid-point of their pay band or £350.
Prospect represents researchers, analysts, statisticians, media officers and librarians within the Department.
