Successful private sector orgs do not treat their staff the way this government does

26 December 2023

Prospect Deputy General Secretary Garry Graham, responding to comments by Cabinet Office Minister John Glen in the Times, said:

“The Government has already introduced quotas to cap recruitment and cut job numbers as part of the coming spending round by 66,000. Budgets are being slashed in real terms, made worse by spiralling inflation.

“Departments are struggling to recruit and retain those with the STEM, data and digital skills they so urgently need. At no point do ministers articulate what government will need to stop doing in the face of these pressures.

“Yet again the Government posit illusory efficiency gains and blame poor performance, rather than the real terms budget cuts, plummeting staff morale and record staff turnover they have overseen. Successful private sector organisations do not treat their staff this way and the government needs to start listening.”
