The Prime Minister has a new slogan but he doesn’t seem to have a new plan

30 June 2020

Prospect General Secretary Mike Clancy has responded to a speech today by the Prime Minister on rebuilding our economy after the pandemic.

Downing Street, London

Mike Clancy said:

“The Prime Minister has a new slogan but he doesn’t seem to have a new plan; the announcements today simply reheat ideas we have heard before.

“Now is the time for transformational investment to protect jobs and a strategy to work with unions and businesses to put the country on the path to a green recovery. The UK economy is likely to be hardest hit in the G7, the government must be more ambitious to rise to the scale of the challenge.

“When the Chancellor gives his statement next week we need to hear how he will revolutionise green energy infrastructure with more renewables and a new generation of clean nuclear power, and we need to hear how we will protect our vital national cultural infrastructure which is on the brink of ruin.

“While the prime minister says he wants to ensure nobody is forgotten, those words will ring hollow to the millions of freelancers and other workers who have been deliberately excluded for government income support schemes and who deserve urgent support.”
