Union: is abolishing Public Health England a wise use of resources during the pandemic?
Prospect Union has questioned whether the restructure of Public Health England, announced by health secretary Matt Hancock, is a wise use of resources.
Hancock confirmed that Public Health England will be replaced by a new agency, known as the National Institute for Health Protection.
Mike Clancy, Prospect general secretary, said:
“Prospect members in both Public Health England and across the public sector have been working incredibly hard to help the country deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
“That work is still continuing right now, together with the many other services and functions they deliver, so there are real questions to answer about whether the restructure announced today is a wise use of resources.
“Our first priority will be representing all those members affected by this change. But we will also robustly make the case for the importance of rigorous and independent advice to government, even when it is advice that ministers don’t want to hear.
“The drip drip of briefings against PHE fits a wider pattern of attacks on both civil servants and experts which has come to categorise this government’s approach and must come to an end.”
Supporting our members
Throughout the process of the restructure, we will be working hard for our members in Public Health England, ensuring they are fairly treated and consulted about any changes to roles that are proposed.
