Wear red on Friday 21 October to Show Racism the Red Card

19 October 2016

This Friday 21 October is Wear Red Day, organised by Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), a charity that uses the high profile of football and its players to help tackle racism in society.

Prospect supports the charity, which recently lost its central government funding and now needs additional funds to continue with its valuable work.

On Friday SRtRC is asking people to wear red and donate £1 per person to the campaign and Prospect is encouraging its own members to follow suit.

Members are also asked to tweet their support and photos to @SRtRC_England and @prospectunion using the hashtag #WRD16 Please also like and share Wear Red Day’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/theredcard

Prospect national secretary Alan Leighton said: “SRtRC carries out valuable work in educating young people about racism in schools across the UK, using footballers as role models.

“The way SRtRC engages young people in its educational events is truly fantastic. It is more vital than ever that the charity’s work continues, in the light of the increase in the number of racist incidents since the EU referendum.”

Leighton added: “You don’t need to organise an event but it would be great if you could wear red, donate £1 and encourage your colleagues to do so.

“Small amounts raised can make a big difference. Just £5 is enough to educate a young person for a whole school day and £50 provides a full day of training for a teacher.

“As Nelson Mandela said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’”
