Public Services

From protecting our rivers to inspecting our workplaces, Prospect members work in the public interest across a range of organisations.

Prospect represents more than 28,000 members in our public services. They work in specialist roles including science, engineering and procurement across more than 120 organisations across the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

Prospect members provide our public bodies with the expertise they need to carry out essential work in areas like food safety, ship design, health and safety inspection, prisoner rehabilitation, preservation of manuscripts, animal health – the list is almost endless.

Like all public servants, our members take pride in their skills and independence from outside influence of any kind. But financial pressures affecting the whole of the public sector are putting professional standards and the terms and conditions of staff under increasing threat.

Your voice at work

Prospect puts our member’s first. Our goal is to protect your interests, your working standards, and make workplaces a fairer place.

We are a recognised union for representing professionals working in the public service, and work with employers to get the best possible outcome for our members.

Through our branch and section structure we can represent members locally with line management or nationally with senior managers and chief executives.

Our members are hard-working and proud to be in this industry, but financial pressures affecting the whole of the public sector are putting professional standards and the terms and conditions of staff under increasing threat.

Whether it’s a personal problem, such as a grievance or a health and safety matter, or a national issue like the annual pay rise or a redundancy agreement, Prospect’s civil service sector will negotiate directly with the employer on your behalf.

Prospect members help to make the machinery of government work in many different ways – and places. As well as working for mainstream UK civil service departments and agencies, Prospect represents professionals employed in:

  • the devolved governments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man
  • arms’ length functions of the UK government such as property taxation (Valuation Office Agency), industry regulation (Ofcom), and auditing. The latter has recently undergone major change. In November 2012, the government transferred around 700 auditors employed by the public sector Audit Commission to new private-sector employers and closed down the Commission’s Audit Practice.

Among these bodies are members who serve the democratic institutions of the electorate – most notably in both Houses of the Westminster Parliament but also in Holyrood (Scottish Parliament), the Senedd (National Assembly for Wales), the Tynwald (Isle of Man), and the States of Jersey and Guernsey.
