Archaeologists

Committed to making sites a safe space for all

Prospect Archaeologist’s Sexual Safety Charter is calling for all organisations operating in the archaeology sector to work together, and individually, in tackling unwanted, inappropriate and/or harmful sexual behaviours in the workplace.

We are seeking a zero-tolerance approach to any unwanted, inappropriate and/or harmful sexual behaviours towards our workforce. And a committment to the following principles and actions to achieve this:

  1. We will actively work to eradicate sexual harassment and abuse in our workplace and will promote a culture
that does not tolerate unwanted, harmful and/or inappropriate sexual behaviours.
  2. We will take an intersectional approach to the sexual safety of our workforce, recognising certain groups
will experience sexual harassment and abuse at a disproportionate rate.
  3. We acknowledge that harassment by third parties is a specific risk to our workforce, and will clearly
communicate expected standards of behaviour and proposed mitigations via RAMS to external contractors,
project participants, and other sector colleagues.
  4. We will ensure appropriate, specific, and clear policies are in place, to include appropriate and timely action
    against alleged perpetrators.
  5. We will provide clear reporting mechanisms for those who witness inappropriate, unwanted and/or
    harmful sexual behaviour.
  6. We will identify an internal lead responsible for EDI.
  7. We will ensure appropriate, specific, and clear training is in place for all, particularly for those dealing with
    incidents and their aftermath.
  8. We will take all reports seriously and appropriate and timely action will be taken in all cases.

These commitments will equally apply to all colleagues and contractors, and anyone engaging with archaeologists.
