A proper energy strategy and deliverable green jobs goals are essential to climate action
The government has today announced a new carbon emissions reduction target of 78% by 2035.
The new target was announced in advance of the COP26 conference in Glasgow later this year.
Prospect senior deputy general secretary Sue Ferns, responded :
“COP26 is an important opportunity for the UK to take a lead on the fight against climate change but ambitious new targets also need ambitious plans to deliver them.
“By working together across industries, government and with unions, the UK could set the pace on a climate action and a Just Transition to new jobs.
“An essential part of our future clean energy mix is going to be new nuclear but we have still had nothing from the government on this but vague assertions of commitment. We have also still not seen a proper energy strategy or a deliverable set of goals on green jobs – both are essential if we are to make the most of the opportunities that exist and continue to be a world climate leader.”
