Abolishing Natural England would be an act of vandalism
The Guardian has reported that the government is in discussions to abolish Natural England.
The apparent plan has only surfaced because it was mentioned in a government document on nature recovery, and spotted by campaigners.
Garry Graham, Prospect Deputy General Secretary, said:
“Abolishing Natural England would be a calamity for England’s natural environment and for the dedicated professionals who work there.
“Sneaking the plan out in a document about nature recovery is at best deeply disrespectful and at worst extremely underhand.
“If we are to achieve net zero and protect the environment for future generations then it is vital we properly fund those who preserve and protect English nature. Getting rid of them would be nothing short of vandalism.”
