BT – government must ensure national interest protected in light of increased Altice stake

Prospect is a leading union in BT. Today has seen news that Altice UK has increased its stake in BT to 18 per cent, further fuelling City speculation about a takeover.

Mike Clancy, general secretary of digital and tech union Prospect, said:

“Any battle for the future of BT must not come at the cost of investment in our digital infrastructure or jobs. Despite a tough economic environment, BT is one of the jewels in the crown of UK R&D and tech innovation.

“This latest news on the future ownership of the company will further unsettle staff in the run up to the festive period, especially given broader concerns about the economy.

“The government needs to ensure that any proposed takeover protects our national interest, infrastructure and jobs. BT is too important to our future economic needs.”
