Civil Service pay system is broken beyond repair

9 August 2023

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect union, responding to the Taxpayers’ Alliance analysis of Civil Service numbers and pay, said:

“The Civil Service pay system is broken beyond repair and needs urgent reform.

“Pay has fallen by 26% since 2010, leading to a recruitment and retention crisis – particularly for the specialists we need to meet the generational challenges our country is facing, who are packing their bags for better pay in the private sector.

“Leaving the EU naturally resulted in the repatriation of government work from Europe to the UK – so it is of little surprise that more civil servants have been needed since 2016.

“Little credibility should be offered to the Taxpayers’ Alliance who described the Truss mini-budget as ‘the most taxpayer-friendly budget in recent memory’.”
