Defence Industrial Strategy welcome but more work to be done on putting British industry and jobs first

9 September 2025

The government has published its Defence Industrial Strategy, which it says will make defence an engine for growth, as well as strengthening security.

The strategy outlines six clear priorities:

  • Making defence an engine for growth.
  • Backing UK-based businesses.
  • Positioning the UK at the leading edge of defence innovation.
  • Developing a resilient UK industrial base.
  • Transforming procurement and acquisition systems.
  • Forging new and enduring partnerships.

Mike Clancy, Prospect General Secretary and a member of the Defence Industry Joint Council, responding to the Government’s Defence Industrial Strategy, said:

“The defence industry is an engine of economic growth and the industrial bedrock of so many local economies.

“As a proud defence trade union, we welcome the government’s announcements in support of the sector, especially the boost for defence skills.

“There is still work to do to ensure that our defence procurement framework puts British industry and British jobs first, and Prospect hopes to work with the government in support of that vital principle.

“Finally, we must never forget that the success of the defence industry relies on the skill and dedication of MOD staff, and any plan to support the industry must include adequate resourcing for vital public sector defence workers as well.”
