EDF Renewables’ acclaimed education programme rolls out to further colleges

9 October 2024

An education programme jointly developed between EDF Renewables UK and Pembrokeshire College is being rolled out to more colleges following a successful pilot run.

The course, called Destination Renewables, is a Level 3 Extended Project Qualification (equivalent to A Levels) and gives 16–18-year-olds an opportunity to explore further study, or a career, in the renewable energy sector.

Since the programme was launched in 2022 at Pembrokeshire College more than 110 students have completed the course, which is a collaboration between industry and academia to bridge the skills gap, and showcase the diverse careers available in renewables.

Students are also given the opportunity to link-up with future employers to prepare them for work experience, apprenticeship opportunities and jobs.

The course has since been shortlisted for a Global Offshore Wind Award and two Wales STEM Awards.

The two new colleges offering the course this year are Neath Port Talbot College, and Falmouth Marine School – and more colleges have expressed an interest in offering it in the future.

Mark Hazelton, Project Director at EDF Renewables UK, said:

“Destination Renewables aims to inspire students to explore future career options in the renewable energy sector needed to build the net zero energy system of the future.

“Working with the lead partners to expand this course to reach additional learners is very exciting and we look forward to working with the new education partners to empower tomorrow’s leaders.”
