English Heritage embarks on redundancy consultation

31 January 2025

English Heritage has told staff that it is looking to restructure the organisation in a move that will result in significant redundancies.

Staff were told that around 20 properties would be open only on certain days becoming “hidden gems” with a further 20 closing over Christmas.

Prospect is supporting members through the consultation.

Steve Thomas, Deputy General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“Staff at English Heritage will be understandably worried about their future after hearing this news, and worried about the future of the historic sites they work so hard to keep open to the public.

“We have been working with the employer to minimise redundancies and help anyone who is affected and we urge English Heritage to continue to engage with us on that basis.

“We recognise that the financial situation is difficult. But it is also true that the skilled and dedicated staff who keep our history alive are the very heart of this organisation; losing these skills and this experience would damage our heritage as much as losing the sites themselves.”
