From Workplace Rep to Sector Leader: Usha Bhangu – New IT&T Sector President
Usha Bhangu is a former Prospect rep and case handler who has long served as a vital support for BT call centre managers in the East Midlands. Now, as the newly elected President of the IT&T Sector, Usha brings a wealth of frontline experience, a strong sense of justice and a passion for empowering others.
Starting her BT career in 1995 as a call centre advisor, Usha balanced part-time work with raising three young children and studying for a business degree at De Montfort University. Her determination eventually led her into management, overcoming institutional barriers to become a respected leader.
Usha is a longstanding Prospect member and sits on the union’s Consumer Industrial Relations Committee (IRC). She became actively involved in the union after witnessing poor treatment of a colleague and deciding to challenge unfair practices from within.
Her insider knowledge of BT’s call centre operations makes her a highly effective advocate. She knows what changes are realistic and which policies simply won’t work on the ground. She’s also not afraid to challenge senior management when staff wellbeing is at stake.
Congratulations to Usha on her election. Her journey from workplace rep to sector leader is a powerful example of how union activism can make a real difference in the workplace. We’re proud to have her representing the sector at the highest level.
