New report shows we need a proper strategy to both achieve Net Zero and create green jobs

15 May 2023

A report into clean jobs and net zero by the UK Business Council for Sustainable Development has shown the huge potential for growth and jobs decarbonising the economy can deliver.

However, the report also bemoans the lack of a coherent strategy from the government and warns that without change we miss missing out on the opportunities and failing to meet our net zero obligations.

Sue Ferns, Senior Deputy General Secretary of Prospect union, said:

“This report confirms that net zero offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create hundreds of thousands of well-paid jobs around the country.

“It shows that accelerating investment in a decarbonised energy system can drive billions of pounds of economic benefits and make the UK a clean energy superpower.

“But it also shows the risks of government inaction. Without a proper strategy to upgrade our energy networks, roll out new technologies and invest in green industries, we risk failing to meet our climate commitments and losing the global race for the jobs of the future.”
