Onshore wind decision a long overdue reverse of appalling de facto ban

5 September 2023

The government has ended its effective ban on new onshore wind in the UK.

Planning rules will be changed immediately to make clear that a single local objection cannot block onshore wind projects. The decision could opens the door for an increase in the amount of wind power the UK can produce.

Sue Ferns, Senior Deputy General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“This is a welcome decision that is long overdue, reversing the appalling de facto ban on onshore wind that left us so exposed to foreign fossil fuels and sent bills skyrocketing.

“Government now needs to demonstrate the ambition required to meet net zero by bringing forward investment in all forms of low carbon energy and creating good jobs in green energy across the country.”
