Parliament must review rules for MPs under investigation

20 May 2021

Prospect, a union representing staff working for both Houses of Parliament has responded to a report by the Independent Expert Panel (IEP) on the conduct of the former Member of Parliament, Mike Hill.

Graham Graham, Prospect Deputy General Secretary, said:

“This ruling raises questions over whether it is right that men who are accused of sexual misconduct are permitted to physically interact with female staff, visitors and MPs themselves, when serious allegations have been made against them and are under investigation.

“The House must now surely review its current practices with regard to sexual allegations against MPs, particularly on this issue of how women can be kept safe at work, while allegations are investigated.

“The House of Commons has a duty of care to them it must uphold.

“We must never forget the bravery of those who have spoken up against misconduct by MPs. They have stood up for what is right against some of the most powerful people in the country, in proceedings that will have taken a huge toll on them. Today’s ruling is a testament to that.”
