Paying our respects and renewing our commitment on the 80th anniversary of VE Day

8 May 2025

As we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the second world war in Europe, we rightly remember the fallen, and the sacrifice they made, fighting fascism. We also remember the families who stood behind them, offering quiet strength and enduring sacrifice at home.

We should also think of our troops stationed at home and abroad, many of whom are in one of the 110-armed conflict areas. Whether serving on submarines, warships and carriers; whether in the Army, Navy, Air Force or special forces, they deserve our respect, as do the thousands of civilians who support them.

Prospect members in the MOD, serving in embassies, working in defence intelligence and supporting our armed forces around the world (often in dangerous areas themselves) are the unseen army supporting the UK’s defence. Our members in the private sector, making sure the very best equipment and support is there for our military are a vital part of the chain that ensures everything, from aircraft to land vehicles, radar systems to the UK’s nuclear deterrent, is ready when needed.

So, whilst we remember the troops who died and the troops who serve, let us also remember the battalion of skilled civilians, many of whom we count amongst our number. As a union, we remain committed to ensuring that all those who serve and who have served, receive the respect, fair treatment and recognition they deserve.

On this 80th anniversary, let us renew our commitment to remember, respect and stand together.
