Politicians urged to act on Prospect’s Manifesto for Good Work

29 August 2014

Prospect is calling on politicians to take notice of its new Manifesto for Good Work in the run-up to the general election.

The union has been consulting members on what they think makes work good, including a special session at our recent national conference in Glasgow.

A public event is being planned in December with the Work Foundation and other organisations who are interested in this, and the union is also holding a fringe meeting at this year’s TUC in September.

Sue Ferns, Prospect director of communications and research, said: “The UK has one of the worst records among OECD countries for using skills at work effectively. The quality of working life continues to deteriorate, both in the public and private sectors, with rising levels of stress and mental ill-health.

“People want to do work that is enjoyable, stretching and fulfilling, and they want their families and communities to have these opportunities, too.”

When Prospect consulted its own members, people identified four priorities for improvement:

  • giving employees a voice
  • fair pay and reward
  • better management of change
  • engagement and respect of employees.
