Prospect leadership programme takes our defence reps all the way to Parliament

26 February 2026

Following the successful launch of our defence lay leadership programme last year, Prospect welcomed a new cohort of reps from across the sector in February for two days of focused development, discussion and practical learning, including a visit to Parliament.

Defence reps were given a tour of Parliament by Calvin Bailey MP (centre)

Reps explored the changing defence landscape, the implications of the new employment law framework and the importance of clear, strategic leadership in challenging workplaces.

Sessions provided valuable insight into where the defence sector is heading and how be and effective workplace rep within the branch and when negotiating with employer.

A particular highlight was the parliamentary visit. Reps travelled to Westminster for a briefing, tour and meeting with Calvin Bailey MP for Leyton & Wanstead and member of the defence select committee.

The meeting gave reps the opportunity to see first-hand how political decisions shape our workplaces and how their voices and those of their members, can influence that process.

The programme also focused on practical skills: communicating effectively with members and employers, building branch strategies and developing clear action plans for the year ahead. These are the foundations of strong workplace organisation and long-term success.

Strong, confident reps are essential to protecting jobs, shaping policy and ensuring that defence workers have a powerful collective voice.

Sue Ferns OBE, Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary, said:

“Our defence reps play a vital role in representing members in some of the most strategically important workplaces in the UK. This programme is about equipping them with the knowledge, confidence and leadership skills they need – not only to respond to today’s challenges, but to shape the future of their workplaces and our union.”
