Prospect reaches access agreement with Meta

Meta has reached its first UK trade union access agreement after being approached by Prospect, allowing the union to speak to employees directly about union membership.

Under the access agreement, Prospect, which represents over 160,000 UK workers including tech workers, will have access to Meta’s 5,000 staff in the UK. Under the agreement Prospect will be able to talk to staff about the benefits of trade union membership and the work of the union, with a view to recruiting more members.

Prospect already has members at Meta, but this is the first time the union has formally reached an agreement with the employer.

The Trade Union Right of Access to workers was introduced in the Employment Rights Act 2025, and comes into force in October. After approaching Meta, Prospect praised the company for pre-empting the legislation and voluntarily striking this access deal with the union.

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“Meta is a significant company in the UK tech sector and this agreement is an important step towards giving Meta workers a stronger  voice at work.

“Prospect has always believed that tech workers need unions just like other workers, and this agreement enables us to make our case to Meta workers and build on our existing membership there.

“It is to Meta’s credit that they have struck this voluntary deal with Prospect, rather than waiting for the new Right of Access to kick in, sending a positive message to staff that they are open to engaging with a union.”

A Meta spokesperson said:

“Prospect reached out to us earlier this year and our London sites now have a voluntary access agreement in place with them. Employees who want to find out more about union membership have a straightforward way to do so. Meta’s industrial relations team already works with employee representative groups in multiple markets, and we are approaching this in the same way.”
