Prospect statement on the Middle East conflict

Prospect is appalled to see the outbreak of war in Iran and the wider region, and our thoughts are with those who are being affected.

It is unarguable that the Iranian regime is barbaric, with thousands of protesters murdered by the government this year alone. In Iran trade union rights are non-existent, and women and minority groups are severely persecuted.

However, the initiation of attacks by the US and Israel cannot be justified under international law. All sides must now strive to find a peaceful resolution and protect the civilians now being put at great risk.

We are aware that members currently in the region, whether working for the UK government or in the private sector will be concerned about the developing situation. Where appropriate we will liaise with employers to ensure proper support for their safety is in place.
