Prospect warns decision delay risks future of Sizewell C

15 July 2022

A decision on a Development Consent Order (DCO) for Sizewell C has been due for some time but repeatedly delayed and is now scheduled for 20 July.

Without a DCO there can be no Government Investment Decision upon which private investment is reliant. If the decision is further delayed it is Prospect’s worry that funding for the project will dry up and it will collapse.

Senior Deputy General Secretary of Prospect Sue Ferns said:

“The Government has less than a week to grant a Development Consent Order for Sizewell C before the summer recess, without which there is a real risk that Sizewell C’s funding dries up and the project collapses.

“New nuclear is one of the key pillars of the Government’s British Energy Security Strategy – there is no path to a net zero, energy secure UK without it. Letting Sizewell C collapse by accident would call into question the entire nuclear programme outlined in the strategy and leave people with world class skills facing an uncertain future.

“Boris Johnson has the chance to cement his legacy as the Prime Minister who finally took the tough decisions to guarantee our energy security – he must take it.”
