Royal Museums Greenwich workers take strike action on day of the solar eclipse
Royal Museums Greenwich workers were on the picket lines for two days of strike action this week, with members taking a stand at entrances across the organisation, including at the Royal Observatory.
Members held pickets at multiple museum entrances on the RMG site across the two days, calling on their employer to deliver on:
- London Living Wage accreditation this year
- Protection of existing Christmas closure annual leave arrangements
- Paid breaks for security workers
- Stronger policies on fixed-term contracts
- Improved training and development opportunities
With the world’s attention turning towards the skies on Wednesday for the solar eclipse, our members at the Royal Observatory stood together to demand fair treatment and better working conditions, from morning opening and into the evening as members of the public gathered, to make their voices heard.
The strike action was followed by a rally in front of the Cutty Sark. Prospect members and supporters gathered to show their solidarity, with the rally taking place from the top of the Fire Brigades Union’s campaign fire engine.
We heard from reps and members from across the museums, as well as the Prospect full-time officers who have been supporting our members throughout the campaign. We also heard from the Fire Brigades Union and the TUC, who came along to show their solidarity with RMG workers.
The two days of action demonstrated the strength of feeling among RMG workers, as well as the hard work and determination that has driven their campaign.
