Springfields nuclear fuel funding welcome

13 December 2022
The Government has announced today that it will be making a £13 million direct award to Westinghouse from the Nuclear Fuel Fund (NFF),  to support them to reinstate conversion capabilities for Reprocessed Uranium and Non-irradiated Uranium products at the Springfields site in Lancashire.

Sue Ferns, Prospect union Senior Deputy General Secretary, responding to news said:
“This funding recognises the essential role Springfields Fuels plays in the UK’s nuclear industry as the sole British fabricator of nuclear fuel.
Nuclear power has a critical role to play in building an energy secure, net zero future for the UK – and we must maintain our long-term capability to produce nuclear fuel to guarantee that security.
“Government must ensure that Sizewell C and the next generation of nuclear power stations in the UK source their fuel from Springfields.”
