The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden announced the plans saying he wanted government to work more like a start-up, with new ways of thinking improving services and efficiency.

Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“Prospect has been saying for some time that the government needs to make better use of data and tech specialists to improve delivery.

“Employing people from the private sector so we can learn from their expertise makes sense but to work properly the flow of talent needs to go in both directions. As the main union for government specialists Prospect is well placed to work with the government to find the best way forward.

“If the new approach is going to be successful then the government needs a competitive offer on pay. We are currently losing specialists to private sector competitors so pay and conditions must be on a level where the flow of talent is two-way, not simply from public to private sector as it is at present.”
