The government’s ten tech priorities ignore the world of work

11 March 2021

The government has today announced it’s ten priorities for tech and AI.

But nowhere does it mention the world of work, where so many of us are noticing the impact of tech on our lives, from increasing surveillance to the always on culture.

General Secretary of Prospect Mike Clancy said:

“Technology is transforming the world of work, especially during the pandemic, but you wouldn’t know it from reading the government’s ten tech priorities. To be a leader in digital technology and AI the government needs to put people and ethics at the heart of its plans. We need a plan for the impact of tech on work – front and centre.

“The two primary areas new tech will affect people are in their personal lives and at work. The impact of tech on people and work needs to be front and centre in government thinking, including on issues like privacy, worker data, and the impact of tech on stress and mental health.”
