The nuclear debate – event to mark National Science and Engineering Week

21 February 2012

What are the critical questions that need to be addressed in the nuclear policy of the future?

That is the subject of a forthcoming debate being organised by the Biochemical Society, the Campaign for Science and Engineering, and Imperial College London to mark National Science and Engineering Week.

The organisers says they are aiming for a discussion that goes beyond the standpoint of ‘pro’ or ‘anti’ nuclear and address critical questions such as:

  • Is arms proliferation still a concern?
  • Can public and private funding really be separated?
  • Does the UK have the professional capacity in engineering to coped with a ‘nuclear renaissance?
  • Are we in danger of ignoring other energy options by focusing on nuclear?

The event will take place between 18:30 – 20:30 on March 15 at the Institute of Physics, in London. Places are free but subject to prior registration.

Attendees can also submit questions for the panellists who include, among others, Professor Roger Cashmore, chair of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and Dr Douglas Parr, chief scientist and policy director at Greenpeace UK.
