Prospect sets date for air traffic control strike at Norwich Airport
Strike will close airport on 28th August
Prospect union has announced that air traffic control staff at Norwich Airport will take one day of strike action on 28th August as part of an ongoing industrial dispute over pay, terms and conditions.
The announcement of strike action comes after Prospect commenced action short of a strike on Monday following the failure of the Airport to make a new offer to attempt to resolve the dispute.
The action short of a strike involves:
- Working strictly to contract
- No non-contractually obligated overtime
- No swapping shifts
- Withdrawal of goodwill
This action is likely to lead to disruption at the airport due to extremely low staffing numbers in air traffic control, which mean that the airport frequently relies on the goodwill of staff in order to achieve safe minimum staffing levels.
The strike action will mean that the airport will be unable to operate on 28th August unless Norwich Airport takes action to resolve the dispute.
David Avery, Prospect National Secretary for Aviation said:
“It is extremely disappointing that we have still not received an acceptable offer from Norwich Airport, which has left us with little choice but to push ahead with this industrial action.
“Our members in air traffic control are not making unreasonable demands, they are simply asking for pay levels and terms and conditions that are normal for their colleagues across the country.
“We hope that the employer can quickly return to the bargaining table with an improved offer that will enable this dispute to be resolved without the need for strike action.”
