Why we’re leaving X
You may have seen recent reports about serious issues on X (formerly Twitter), including its AI tool being used to create harmful, non-consensual sexualised images of women and girls. This is unacceptable and goes against what we stand for as a union.
We have kept our use of the platform and the behaviour of its owner, Elon Musk, under review for some time, given failures to tackle racist and other abuse on the platform, and the deliberate promotion of Far Right content, and have discussed this issue with other unions.
After careful consideration we have decided to stop using the platform following a recommendation from the General Secretary which was endorsed by the Presidential Team and agreed by the National Executive Committee. Prospect and Bectu have now stopped posting on X. We believe this decision will protect members and upholds our principles.
So what happens now?
- Updates will no longer be shared on X but the accounts will stay live to prevent impersonation
- If you haven’t already, follow Prospect on Bluesky, LinkedIn and Facebook for the latest news and campaigns
- Branches operating an X account are encourage to follow suit, though the final decision rests with branches
