Being a world leader in clean energy requires ambitious Net Zero targets
The UK can be a world leader in clean energy but to achieve that we must set ourselves ambitious Net Zero targets, says Prospect, in response to widely reported comments made by the former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair.
Writing in the foreword to a new report published by the Tony Blair Institute, Sir Tony Blair writes that the climate debate was ‘riven with irrationality’ and that a strategy to limit fossil fuels, or ask people to reduce consumption, was ‘doomed to fail.’
However, Sue Ferns, Senior Deputy General Secretary of Prospect says:
“The UK has the opportunity to be a world leader in clean energy but for that to happen we need ambitious targets for Net Zero.
“Complaints about cost are misplaced and short-termist. If done properly in combination with a targeted industrial strategy achieving Net Zero can bring significant economic benefits and good quality jobs to the UK.
“First and foremost, we need a balanced energy mix with new nuclear and a range of renewables to secure our country’s energy future.”
