NESO report makes clear importance of nuclear baseload

5 November 2024

The National Energy System Operator has published an analysis looking at how the government can achieve its ambition of 100% Clean Energy by 2030.

The report shows that the ambition is achievable but that for long-term energy security the country really needs to get going on building new nuclear.

Sue Ferns, Senior Deputy General Secretary of Prospect, said:

“The government’s mission to achieve Clean Energy generation by 2030 is an important one and this report shows that it is both possible and can beneficial to the country beyond simply our carbon goals. Unions and the workforce will be essential to delivering the plan which will involve a concerted effort around skills and resilience as well as headline numbers.

“The NESO report also makes clear how important nuclear baseload is to decarbonising our electricity system.

“There is no time to waste if we want to hit our 2030 goals and ensure future security of supply. We need to get Sizewell C over the line, which means a prompt Final Investment Decision, and get going immediately on a comprehensive new build programme to replace the current nuclear fleet as it goes offline.

“We should also extend the life of existing nuclear supply but if we do, that cannot be an excuse for further delay in new build.”
