New oil and gas licences fail to recognise scale of response to climate crisis needed

31 July 2023

Prospect, the UK’s leading energy trade union, has commented on the government’s announcement of new North Sea oil and gas licences and its carbon capture and storage plans.

Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary Sue Ferns said: “These announcements fail to recognise the scale of the response to the climate crisis that is needed.

“A proper plan would put delivering good green jobs at the absolute heart of a long-term plan to deliver on Net Zero and energy security.

“Notwithstanding this, Prospect has been a long-term supporter of carbon capture and storage and the news about the Acorn project is positive from both a climate change and just transition perspective.”
