NIA jobs report shows positive role of nuclear in our economy

15 September 2025

The UK’s nuclear industry has reached a record high, now employing 98,173 people across the sector, according to a major annual jobs report from the Nuclear Industry Association.

The figure represents an 11,000 increase on last year’s total and a 55% surge over the past decade, driven by £14.2 billion of additional government investment in Sizewell C, £2.5 billion for SMRs, and major ongoing decommissioning programmes.

Hinkley Point C has tripled the nuclear workforce in the south west — from 8,200 in 2015 to more than 31,000 today— making it the UK’s largest nuclear hub.

Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary Sue Ferns OBE said in response to the news:

“Nuclear is an essential component of our energy mix delivering clean, on-demand energy and helping us meet our net zero goals.

“What these job figures also demonstrate is that nuclear plays a hugely positive role in our economy, providing good, unionised jobs, often in areas where they are sorely needed.”
