This agreement means that Prospect is now the official trade union for staff at GBE-N, which is headquartered in Warrington. GBE-N is the government’s expert nuclear delivery body responsible for driving forward the UK’s small modular reactor (SMR) programme.
Prospect is the largest trade union in the civil nuclear sector with members across the NDA estate, Urenco, Springfields Nuclear Fuels, ONR, NNL, UKAEA and various organisations across the supply chain. We also represent thousands of civil and public servants in both central departments and a range of arms-length bodies making it the perfect fit for GBE-N.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said:
“I am delighted to see that Great British Energy – Nuclear and Prospect have signed a recognition agreement. This is not only an important step towards ensuring economic security for workers across the country, but it is also a recognition of the essential role that trade unions are playing in driving forward good terms and conditions for workers, and clean energy for the country.”
“This Government’s clean energy mission means good, unionised jobs in clean energy, from small modular reactors to renewables to carbon capture and storage.”
Mike Clancy, Prospect General Secretary, said:
“This recognition agreement is an important symbol that with government investment must come good quality unionised jobs.
“Energy is an industry where the success of unions can be plainly seen, particularly when you look at health and safety. That’s why it is so important that the government body responsible for supporting the nuclear industry has led by example in recognising Prospect.
“We look forward to working with GBE-N as we forge a new era in nuclear generation.”
Gwen Parry-Jones, CEO of Great British Energy – Nuclear, said:
“As we enter our next phase, I’m delighted to have signed this recognition agreement on behalf of Great British Energy – Nuclear.
“Trade Unions have such an important role to play in our sector, I have a long and very positive relationship with Prospect and I look forward to this carrying on within GBE-N.”
Jez Stewart, Prospect National Secretary, said:
“The civil nuclear sector in the UK has a long history of good unionised jobs. At a time of great optimism for the sector we are delighted to have developed our relationship with GBE-N to a point where we have signed a recognition agreement. We look forward to welcoming new members and reps into Prospect and to working with your employer to ensure the best outcome for both GBE-N and its workforce.”
