Prospect at 10 Downing Street to discuss Climate Jobs UK and renewables
Sue Ferns OBE, Prospect Senior Deputy General Secretary, and Tom Railton, Prospect’s Head of Communications and Political Advocacy, were invited to 10 Downing Street in August to discuss the Climate Jobs UK campaign and trade union organising in the renewables sector.
This summer, Prospect joined forces with our counterparts at GMB union to launch Climate Jobs UK, a new campaigning group with the aim of putting green energy jobs and workers at the centre of the UK’s transition to a low carbon future.
Prospect, and colleagues from the GMB, met with a group of the Prime Minister’s advisors at 10 Downing Street to discuss issues such as:
- How the government can strategically use energy procurement to ensure high quality jobs are created in clean energy;
- How to spread trade union collective bargaining agreements and membership in the clean energy sector;
- Securing a just transition for workers as they transition within the energy industry.
They were also able to share results from Prospect’s survey of energy workers with the Prime Minister’s advisors, and raise issues of workforce resilience and training within the industry.
After the meeting, Sue Ferns OBE, said: “Prospect will continue to use its political influence to secure wins for our energy members at work. The government is soon expected to publish a Clean Energy Workforce Strategy, where we hope some real progress can be made.”
