RenewableUK launches Just Transition tracker

9 June 2021

A new document setting out how it intends to work with its member companies to promote best ‘Just Transition’ practice within the renewable energy sector has been launched by RenewableUK.

The Just Transition Tracker document sets out three areas: people, places and planet and it is hoped that it will encourage firms to uphold high ethical and environmental standards.

RenewableUK represents more than 400 companies in the renewables sector from large multinationals to smaller companies in the supply chain.

RenewableUK’s Deputy Chief Executive Melanie Onn said: “Our member companies are delivering the backbone of our future energy system in the UK and we are working closely with them to do this in a way which provides high-quality jobs for people in all parts of the UK and from all backgrounds.

The people section of the document highlights the importance of creating fair, well-paid jobs for people from a diverse range of backgrounds and calls for investment in apprenticeships and training.

Workers from other energy sectors are also encouraged to transition into renewables.

RenewableUK chair Stephen Bull said: “The energy transition is about so much more than providing low carbon energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Our hope is not only to bring people together to discuss and raise the profile of a just transition, but also to share proof points demonstrating where and how our members are integrating carbon reductions with lasting business and social benefit.”

RenewableUK’s Just Transition Tracker document is available to download from its website.
