UK Security Vetting facing job cuts

10 September 2025

As part of the Cabinet Office’s Future Programme, which aims to significantly reduce the size of its workforce by 2029, UK Security Vetting (UKSV) will be cutting 15% of its jobs by the end of October.

Most of these reductions will take place through a Voluntary Exit Scheme, with the majority of affected roles being Vetting Officers who carry out security vetting across government and the defence sector.

Prospect has raised concerns about the impact of these cuts, highlighting the potential strain on resources and the possible security risks arising from reduced vetting capacity. UKSV has stated that the job reductions are possible due to a decrease in demand for vetting across government.

Prospect will continue to advocate for UKSV to have the resourcing it needs to ensure vetting is carried out properly and securely.
